TIPP CITY, Ohio. (CITC) — An Ohio school board member gave a Nazi salute to a fellow member during a tense interaction Tuesday evening.
The gesture came as school board members for Tipp City Schools (TCS), located just outside Dayton, discussed recent district projects. Simon Patry, who resigned as TCS school board president at the end of Tuesday's meeting, was speaking on transparency when board member Anne Zakkour attempted to interject.
"We have been talking ... to the community, to the board, there's been regular reports ... I'm talking, do not interrupt me, do not make any noises or else I will -- I will not tolerate it," Patry said, directing his latter comments to Zakkour.
"Oh ... Sieg Heil," Zakkour said in response, acting out a Nazi salute towards Patry.
Patry did not react to Zakkour's gesture.
In a statement to Crisis in the Classroom (CITC), Zakkour said Patry "has been acting like a dictator" on the school board for years, and she has "had enough of his demands of total obedience."
"My reaction last night was symbolic and a sarcastic gesture of submission to a board officer acting as a dictator," Zakkour told CITC. "Enough is enough!"
At the conclusion of the meeting, Patry announced his intention to resign from the TCS school board, effective immediately. He told the other board members that he wished for Amber Drum, the vice president of the school board, to assume his role.
Patry did not indicate whether Zakkour's actions earlier in the meeting had any impact on his decision to resign.
CITC reached out to TCS for comment, as well as to learn whether Zakkour's actions will be addressed by the district. This story will be updated if a response is received.
